Tackling Food Inequality in Hartford
This summer, YOUmedia Hartford served as a site for the Summer Meals Program. That means that the teen space was allotted 45 breakfast and lunch meals each day; meals which included drinks, nutritious entrees, and wholesome snacks, such as fruits and nuts. Everyday YOUmedia was open, 45 teens had a secure source of food.
The USDA has reported that an estimated 14% of American households are food insecure. Hartford is no exclusion; in 2016, Hartford Food System reported that more than 40% of Hartford’s youth live below the national poverty line. It is no surprise, then, that 1 in 3 Hartford youths participated in the Summer Meals Program in 2015. This summer, all 90 meals, breakfast and lunch, were handed out every operating day, with many teens hoping also for seconds. YOUmedia was honored to assist in making meals available to Hartford’s youth this summer.
As a result of our success this summer, YOUmedia is pleased to announce meal service on Tuesday-Thursday at 6 PM.
